Regional Events February, 2006 On February 17, 2006, state Newborn Screening Lab Directors and Genetics Coordinators representing each state met at the Emory Conference Center in Atlanta to discuss laboratory performance standards. The workgroup was chaired by Joseph Muenzer from North Carolina and Tom Hickey from South Carolina. Piero Rinaldo from the May Clinic shared his experiences in Region 4. Participants included Cindy Ashley (Alabama); Jamin Torres, Lois Taylor and Robert Zori (Florida); Ramachandran, Mary Ann Henson, Jill Ray, Nicole Alexander, Tricia Page (Georgia); Art Hagar, Charlie Myers (Louisiana); Beryl Polk (Mississippi); Shu Chaing, Dianne Frazier (North Carolina); Bryant Fortner (South Carolina); Cindy Wallace (Tennessee); Gabrielle Benjamin (Virgin Islands); David Ledbetter, Rani Singh, Kristine Smilie, Mary Brauchla, Mary Beth Weber, and Mary Rose Lane (Emory University). January, 2006 SERGG held a training session for the videoconference MAC distributed to each state and territory on January 28, 2006, at the Emory Conference Center in Atlanta. Bruce Bowdish from Tulane along with Hans Andersson and Shaun Scott took each participant step-by-step through the process of using the new software. Each left with a higher level of knowledge of the system. Participants included: Phaidra Browning (Alabama); Mittie Moffet, Chris Porter (Florida); Dan Evan, Rani Singh, Mary Rose Lane (Georgia); Hans Andersson, Amy Cunningham (Louisiana); Omar Rahman (Mississippi); Dianne Frazier (North Carolina); Tom Hickey (South Carolina); Carmen Lozzio (Tennessee); and Mike Alcorn, Patricia Penn (Virgin Islands). 2005 National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) Region III The 2005 National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) Region III meeting was hosted by the Emory Department of Human Genetics on April 15-16, 2005, in Decatur, Georgia. Meeting Co-chairs Sara Cooper, MS, and Dawn Laney, MS, report that the meeting was a great success with 45 individuals registered from across the region (Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee). The speakers were excellent and received high praise from the attendees. Highlights of the meeting included a wonderful presentation by an articulate, successful, and goal-oriented woman affected by Down Syndrome, and the NSGC leadership initiative sponsored speaker on leadership.
